Foods You Eat Every Day Affects Your Dental Health

There are many foods in the American diet that are good for you. Some of them, however, such as fast food, is not as good for you – no matter how good they taste. A number of foods are not only bad for your health, but they will also lead to damaged teeth, too. Some of the worst foods are also some of the favorite ones, as well.

Sugary Foods

Everyone loves sweets. It seems people cannot get enough of them. Sugary foods are abundant in this country and they are present everywhere. You can buy them in the store, eat them at the office, make them at home, and have them at most parties and get-togethers. There are so many, that if you do not get enough of them through the day, you know you can rely on your stash at home for your daily sugar fix.


While sugar is such a favorite, it is also one of the best foods that damage teeth. This is because of the many types of bacteria in your mouth. Some of it turns sugar into acid whenever it consumes it. As the bacteria accumulate on your teeth through the day, the acid also stays on your teeth until it is removed by brushing and flossing. This leads to damaged tooth enamel and tooth decay.



Every time you take a sip of a sugary drink, which are the worst drinks for your teeth, such as soda, fruit juice, sports drinks, sweetened tea, or a specialty coffee, the bacteria will produce acid for the next 20 minutes. If you have a habit of drinking sweet drinks all day long, then you are exposing your teeth to a lot of acid - and potential decay.

Sticky Foods

Eating sugary snacks does exactly the same thing. There is one difference, however, because many sugary snacks will stick to your teeth longer than a drink or other food. This includes dried fruit. As the food stays on your teeth, it is placing the acid right there, too, where it can do the most damage. This type of food can also easily get caught between your teeth, where even a toothbrush cannot remove it.


When food is stuck between your teeth, the bacteria multiply and continue to produce acid until the food is removed or it completely breaks down. This is why flossing is so important. It protects your teeth from being damaged – even if you brush daily.


Acidic Foods

Another food group that will damage your teeth is foods that are high in acid content. Among the worst of acidic foods is soda. In addition to having loads of sugar (as much as 10 teaspoons in a single can), each soda also contains lots of acid. This acid is different than the bacteria produces, and some diet sodas contain a still different acid.



In addition to sodas being acidic, other drinks include citric fruit juices, coffee, tea, and alcohol. Some high acid foods include lemons, tomatoes, and tomato-based products, pickles, and more. Sour candies that are soft are also bad because they not only are acidic, but they will also stick to your teeth.


Breads

Bread is often eaten with many meals. When you eat bread, it is turned into sugar by your saliva. This is more sugar for the bacteria that will harm your teeth. It also becomes like a paste in your mouth, which will stick between your teeth. Eating whole wheat bread is a healthier option for your teeth because it is not turned into sugar as easily.


Potato Chips

Chips are everyone's favorite snack food. Love that crunch. Like bread, it is also full of starch, which becomes sugar in your mouth. It also will stick between your teeth.


Alcohol

Alcohol is bad for your teeth for a couple of reasons. First, alcohol is acidic. Secondly, alcohol will cause dehydration.


Any substance that will dry out your mouth is bad for your teeth. This includes alcohol and other diuretics (tea and coffee). This is because you need plenty of saliva to wash away the bacteria and acid from your teeth through the day. When you do not have enough, it enables the bacteria to multiply that much more and to produce that much more acid.

Prevention

You can help your teeth to last longer, and the teeth of your children, if you eat less sugar in your drinks and snacks. Drink more water in its place. Avoiding acidic foods will also help, but so will drinking water after these foods. Brushing your teeth after eating or drinking harmful substances can also help, and flossing daily will remove it from between your teeth.


If you neglect taking good care of your teeth by brushing twice a day and flossing, you could also develop gum disease. This is caused by the same bacteria. When it gets into your gums, they will start to recede. Treatment will be needed for it, and it could cause you to lose your teeth altogether in more advanced forms.
