Amazing Home Remedies That Work
The dental plaque that forms every day on your teeth is harmful to them. This plaque is made up of bacteria that are naturally in your mouth. If left on your teeth for prolonged periods, it can cause cavities and gum disease. Frequent plaque removal will help your teeth and gums to stay healthy much longer, and it will also enable you to have better overall health, too.
When plaque is left on your teeth, it will eventually produce tartar. This substance cannot be removed by a toothbrush or floss. The bacteria that cause gum disease will multiply in it and cause gum disease before long.
When you want to remove plaque from teeth, the best way to remove plaque from teeth is a toothbrush. However, quickly running it over your teeth is not going to be sufficient. You need to take your time and spend about two minutes every time you brush. It takes about that long – or longer – to do a good job. Less than that and you are likely to leave plaque buildup on your teeth.
It is also necessary to use floss at least once a day. While a toothbrush will remove food particles and dental plaque from your teeth, it cannot remove them from the spaces between your teeth.
The Best Type of Toothbrush
There are many types of toothbrushes on the market today. Choosing the best toothbrush can be complicated. Ideally, you want to get one with soft bristles because this allows the bristles to bend some and go below the gum line. A toothbrush with hard bristles will tend to wear away your gums and they do not grow back.
It really does not matter which type of toothbrush you buy – traditional or electric. The difference is in how you use it, rather than the type. If you have difficulty holding a toothbrush or using it, an electric toothbrush will make it easier.
Some home methods you may want to try for plaque removal include:
You probably already have baking soda in your house, which means you can use it right away. It is beneficial to help remove dental plaque and to neutralize the acid. It is a little bit abrasive so you do not want to use it more than once or twice a week.
In order to use it, mix two parts of baking soda to one part salt. Dip the bristles of a wet toothbrush in the mixture and brush with it. After brushing, rinse your mouth out with warm water.
Many people like to use oil to help remove plaque. The favorites for oil pulling are either coconut or sesame oil. Although there is no proof of its effectiveness, a lot of people like to use it to remove the bacteria on their teeth. They also claim it will strengthen their teeth and help prevent cavities. Coconut oil is preferred because it has lauric acid in it, which is known to be antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.
You can use this process by placing a tablespoon of the oil in your mouth and swishing it around for about five to 20 minutes. When you are done, spit it out in your trash can because it will harden in your pipes and clog them.
Eating Spicy Cuisines
If you love Mexican or Indian food, you will enjoy this one. When food has a lot of spices in it, it can reduce the plaque on teeth and tartar levels. Because the spices increase the amount of saliva in your mouth, it will help reduce the bacteria that cause the plaque build up. Eating any kind of food, however, is not a substitute for brushing and flossing.
Most mouthwashes and rinses advertise that they can kill most bacteria – which is true. While they certainly can help to keep your mouth clean, they are not a substitute for a toothbrush and floss. They will only destroy bacteria that the liquid touches, which means that it will not actually remove it from your teeth – or kill the bacteria between your teeth.
This can become a problem because when plaque is not removed, it will become tartar. Tartar is hardened plaque, and a toothbrush cannot remove it. Your dentist will need to do this for you during a dental cleaning.
Smoking is one of the worst things you can do if you want to prevent the buildup of plaque. Because the nicotine reduces the blood flow in your gums, this reduces the nutrients your gums receive, and it also reduces the effectiveness of your immune system in your gums – letting the bacteria multiply faster and have a more harmful effect on your teeth.
