Some foods are more harmful than helpful for your teeth

Foods present an interesting problem when it comes to taking care of your teeth. Some of them can help your teeth to be strong and healthy, and other ones, such as acidic foods, can hurt them. In order to ensure that your teeth last as long as possible, this makes it important to know which ones will help you keep healthy teeth and gums, and the foods that damage teeth.

 

Soda

  • Drinking one or two sodas every now and then will not likely harm your teeth, but drinking them often certainly will. Sodas rank as being the  worst drinks for your teeth because they contain a lot of sugar and acids. Diet sodas and sugar-free sodas are not exempt from this problem. While they may not contain sugar, they do contain their own unique acids, which can also harm your teeth.


  • Because of the amount of sugar in a soda, the acid will be attacking your teeth for about 20 minutes with each swig you take. Sipping on soda means that it will prolong the attack and cause more damage.

Sugars



Sugars are the prime ingredient behind tooth decay. Eating too many foods or snacks, or sodas, laden with sugar is a major cause for tooth decay in children and adults. It also makes it more difficult for your mouth to fight against infections, which could easily lead to gum disease. Foods that normally contain a lot of sugar include:

  • Soft drinks
  • Candy
  • Pastries
  • Cookies.

In your mouth, sugars turn to acid, and then it attacks the enamel on your teeth. This is because the bacteria in your mouth increase with lots of sugar, and they attack the enamel. Keeping the sugar levels down helps prevent the rapid growth of bacteria in your mouth. Cutting down on sugary snacks will help prevent constantly keeping high levels of sugar from damaging your teeth and gums. Brushing after eating a sugary food is a good idea, as well as drinking water afterwards.

Hard Candy

In addition to having a lot of sugar in them, hard candy may damage your teeth. They can chip your teeth or even break one. This may cause you to need a quick visit to the dentist for an emergency repair. If you wear veneers, it can also damage them.


Chewing on Ice

This is the same as hard candy. It can damage your teeth. In the case of fillings, enough of a tooth may have been needed to be removed to ensure the cavity is gone. This may leave thin walls of the remaining tooth – which may crack when chewing hard foods.

High Acid Foods

  • Citrus Fruit

                        

Although tasty, and rather healthy, they also contain various acids. When consuming a lot of acidic drinks or fruits, they can damage the enamel on your teeth. Some fruit also contains a considerable amount of sugar – and fruit juices even more. An alternative is to drink more water.


  • Vegetables

Some vegetables are also high acid foods. The three with the most acid levels include:

  • Sauerkraut
  • Cabbage
  • Beets
  • Corn.

Coffee and Tea



America's favorite drinks, coffee and tea, can also be bad for your teeth. While healthy in some ways, they become unhealthy choices if you tend to add a lot of sugar to them. Sugar can be added directly, or remember that most creamers also have a lot of sugar in them. These two drinks can also stain your teeth if you drink a lot of them.

Sticky Foods

Some foods will stick to your teeth longer than others. This includes dried fruit, gummies, trail mix, and similar foods. Because they stick on your  teeth, it means that the sugars stay in contact with your teeth longer than other foods. After eating, be sure to brush and rinse with water to remove the sugar.

Chips

Most foods that we eat as a snack, such as potato chips, corn chips, and similar foods, contain starch – which is a sugar. Pieces of these foods get caught between your teeth, which will promote bacterial growth. This makes it necessary to floss in order to remove the potential harm to your teeth.

 

Alcohol



  • Consuming a lot of alcohol is not good for your teeth because it can lead to a dry mouth over time. This is great for the bacteria in your mouth but bad for your teeth. The saliva in your mouth helps control the bacteria, so having healthy amounts is good. Chewing a sugarless gum can help.


  • Avoiding certain foods can help you keep healthy teeth and gums longer. While tooth decay from acidic foods is never rapid, you will be glad you ate right to keep your teeth longer – especially when you need to sit in a dentist's chair to get fillings or extractions.
