How Often Should I Floss?

We all know that flossing is important to having healthy teeth and gums. But you may be wondering, how often should I floss?

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, you should floss at least once a day, and do it properly. If you miss a day, don’t panic. Just try to brush or swish with a mouthwash, but do try to floss at least 3-4 times each week.

There is a right way and a wrong way to floss:

  • Use about 18 inches of floss each time, winding it around your middle fingers until you have about 1-2 inches of floss to work with.

  • Pull floss taut while flossing, but the flossing motion itself shouldn’t be harsh.

  • Gently slide floss between each tooth, and low enough to gently floss the nooks and crannies, including the gums.

  • Don’t make your gums bleed.

  • Use fresh floss always. Used floss just puts old bacteria back into your mouth.

There are some interesting facts about flossing you should know:

  • Floss comes flavored and unflavored, waxed or un-waxed, nylon or plastic.

  • Flossing too hard can cause pain and bleeding gums.

  • Flossing removes food and plaque that brushing can’t reach.

  • Flavors of floss include cinnamon, mint, bubblegum, and bacon.

  • Now flossing can be done with steady pulses of water as well- Water flossers & Water flossing is approved by ADA

You wouldn’t call yourself clean without washing your hair, so why would you call your mouth clean without flossing your teeth?
